Why Learn Basket Weaving in Yorkshire?

Yorkshire is known for its stunning natural beauty, and what better place to learn a traditional craft than in the heart of the countryside? My basket making courses in Yorkshire are held at our tipi site on the rural outskirts of York, where you can enjoy the fresh air and peaceful surroundings while getting hands-on with willow, rush, and other natural materials.

Basket weaving is more than just a craft; it’s an art that connects you with nature, tradition, and your own creativity. Whether you're looking to make beautiful baskets for your home, gifts for loved ones, or just want to try something new, my courses offer you the perfect introduction.

What Makes My Basket Weaving Course Special? 🌿✨

Experience You Can Trust:

With over 20 years of teaching basket weaving, I’ve honed the skills and techniques to guide you through every step of the process. I’ve had the pleasure of teaching hundreds of students and have even been featured on the BBC and Channel 4. I’ve even taught Countryfile Presenters how to weave willow. Whether you’re making your first basket or looking to refine your skills, I provide tailored guidance to ensure your success.

Peaceful, Inspiring Location:

The tipi site near York provides a tranquil, rustic atmosphere that helps you escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Imagine learning a timeless craft surrounded by the beauty of nature, with plenty of space to relax and be inspired. Courses take place inside a cosy workshop with a wood-burning stove.

Patient, Supportive Teaching Style:

As a calm and patient teacher, I understand that learning a new craft can feel daunting, especially if it’s your first time weaving. I’m here to support you, answer your questions, and guide you at your own pace. My highly reviewed courses have earned me praise for creating an encouraging environment where students feel confident and empowered.

Thorough

Unlike some courses that only teach you a pairing weave and a simple track border, at Wild Harvest, we work you hard! As you are spending a day making your basket we want you to LOVE it! This means that you learn two different weaves and perfectly finish your basket with a complicated plaited style three rod wale border. The border requires 1:1 tuition for the last ten minutes of your basket, meaning the attention to detail in our courses is much greater.

Highly Reviewed – Join a Community of Happy Crafters!

My students consistently leave glowing reviews on Google and Facebook, praising not only the quality of the teaching but also the warm, welcoming atmosphere I create in each class. Many of them return for additional courses to expand their skills and explore new techniques. You’ll be joining a vibrant, friendly community of fellow crafters who are always eager to share tips and celebrate each other’s progress.

Create Beautiful, Handcrafted Baskets:

Basket weaving isn’t just a craft; it’s an opportunity to create functional art. From rustic country baskets to modern, elegant designs, you’ll be able to make something truly unique. By the end of the course, you’ll have a handmade basket to take home, along with the skills to make many more in the future!

What Will You Learn in My Basket Weaving Course in Yorkshire?

During the course, you will learn how to:

  • Prepare materials - understand how to select and prepare willow for weaving.
  • Weave a variety of traditional techniques to create strong, beautiful baskets.
  • Finish your basket to a high standard, ready for years of use.
  • Understand the history and traditions behind basket weaving, and how willow can be used for medicine and for other items such as garden structures and even coffins.

You’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the materials and techniques used in this ancient craft, which has been practiced in Yorkshire for centuries. Whether you want to create a basket, for eggs, flowers, wool and crafts, or kindling, you’ll find that the skills you learn are versatile and can be adapted to a variety of styles.
